Weighing private vs. group music lessons

Aug. 14, 2004 12:00 AM

Once upon a time in America, neighborhood piano teachers gave lessons to little boys and girls.

Like Marian the Librarian's mother in The Music Man, these teachers were generally elderly ladies who taught scales and proper fingering and good discipline. If you were good, they'd let you play a little Beethoven.

The neighborhood piano teacher is still with us. But, to reverse the French adage, the more things stay the same, the more they change. She is sometimes a he, often not at all elderly, and frequently given to more creative approaches than the simple laying on of the 24 major and minor scales, with Für Elise as a treat.
