Memorial Day service to be held at Mesa Cemetery
The Mesa Cemetery's annual Memorial Day service will be held at 10 a.m.,
Monday, May 30. The 30-minute program, organized and presented by several
American Legion posts in Mesa, will pay tribute to those who gave their
lives in service to their country. Flags also will be placed on the
markers of those who served.
The Mesa Cemetery is located at 1212 N. Center St. The memorial service
will take place outside the cemetery's administrative offices and is open

Quail Run Park to undergo renovation beginning June 6
Beginning June 6, Mesa's off-leash dog area at Quail Run Park will undergo
renovation to a large portion of its lower basin area. The overall project
will improve the grass at the park.
Access to the open areas of the park will be through the timid dog section
located toward the back of the basin. The project is anticipated to last
approximately seven weeks.

City of Mesa Library receives donation from Mexican consulate
The City of Mesa Library recently received a generous donation of 141 books
from the Phoenix office of the Mexican consulate.
Virginia Aguero, a Mesa resident and former City of Mesa Library board
member, facilitated the donation of Spanish-language books from the office
of the Consul General Carlos Flores Vizcarra. Along with librarian Rosa
Hamilton and the Consulate's culture and education division, a number of
translated and original titles were donated. Among those in the collection
were translated works by Victor Hugo and Edgar Allen Poe, as well as
contemporary Mexican authors and children's books. It is the second such
donation from the consulate office in seven years.

City Council presents 2005 Historic Preservation Awards
The Mesa City Council presented the 2005 Historic Preservation Awards
during its general council meeting May 16. Award recipients included Lori
Osiecki for outstanding achievement in lifetime contribution, Nancy Norton
for outstanding achievement in education, and Mesa Violin Studios for
outstanding achievement in adaptive reuse and restoration. The City had
previously honored Osiecki, affiliated with the West Second Street Historic
District, in 2002 with an award for outstanding neighborhood leadership,
now known as the Virginia Lamb award.
Since 1998, the City has presented 30 historic preservation awards in
categories including adaptive reuse, rehabilitation, restoration,
education, tourism, activism, general preservation and lifetime
