Tempe Papago Park Green Line Overlook Opens

Tempe Papago Park Green Line Overlook Opens

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona Historical Society Museum's interpretive area on
the Tempe Papago Park Green Line Overlook opens to the public with a
celebration at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, at the Arizona Historical Society
Museum, 1300 North College Avenue. The Green Line Project is a
collaborative project between the City of Tempe and the Arizona Historical
Society and is sponsored by the Arizona Water Protection Fund.

Since the late 1960's, the nearby Tempe J.G. Martinez Water Treatment Plant
has discharged a small amount of water down a desert wash as part of normal
potable water treatment plant operations. Over time it resulted in the
growth of a lush riparian habitat, known as the Green Line. The
preservation, protection and restoration of this riparian corridor are the
main elements of the Green Line Project. Educational and interpretive
programs, including a new interpretive site, explain the development of the
Green Line and explore the impact of water in the desert and the riparian
habitat, including birds, plants and animals.

Photo Opportunities: Events planned for the day include kid crafts from 10
a.m. to noon, the Green Line opening celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. (remarks
and ribbon cutting at 2 p.m.), and Lantern Lore (songs, poetry and
storytelling) from 5 to 8 p.m.
