PILOT PROJECT EFFECTIVE IN REDUCING PLASTIC BAGS IN RECYCLING
A recent Eagle Scout project, conducted in collaboration with Scottsdale Solid Waste Management staff, appears effective in reducing the number of plastic bags placed in Scottsdale recycling containers.
The bags are not accepted by valley recycling facilities and are the No. 1 recycling contaminant in Scottsdale and every other major city in Maricopa County. The bags not only take up space in containers, but also require extra resources to remove them during the material sorting process.
In July, Boy Scout Steven Kann teamed with other scouts and city staff to address the problem. They placed "NO PLASTIC BAGS" stickers on more than 1,200 recycling barrels in the McDowell Mountain Ranch area in hopes of reducing the number of plastic bags placed in them.
The project appears successful. Prior to the stickers, homeowners were placing an average of 6.4 plastic bags per week in recycling loads. Once the stickers were placed on the barrels, the average number of bags dropped to 3.3 per week.
Scottsdale officials will evaluate the results and could expand the project to more areas of the city.
